Tarot of Things is  a short film which speculates a future where objects and people have strong bonds and costumers come to the store of Tarot of Things to find out what they will going to do with the valueless objects.

What is Garbage?

Inspired by waste classification, which I think, is an interesting activity that applies specific values to waste according to their future management for human: recycle, non-recycle, hazardous…

Start from this point, I researched through several projects and activities that somehow changes people’s perception of waste, including Dharavi, the biggest slum in India where people built up a circular economy to reuse their waste as resources; Waste Land, an art work done by Vik Muniz using garbage from world’s biggest landfill site outside Rio de Janeiro; Yago Eco Accessories who make ear rings and necklace out of recycled plastic bags.

As a research process, I went on a mudlarking trip along Thames river. I collected some from the river bed and build an mini archive for the bottle caps.
How to prevent it to become valueless ?

Tarot reading can be both seen as a divination method for believers of spiritual forces or simply a card game for non-believers. In either ways, tarot reading is a way of creating stories, which might or might not be true, that inspires and encourages the querent to deeply look at things that bothers him or her.

Tarot of Things serves not as a real connection of the spiritual forces inside objects, but more importantly, it’s a way of building up stories for mundane objects so that we can pay attention to what we choose and what we use in daily life, and consider the results or consequences of a simple action such as throwing away a bottle can bring. It also brings an interesting perspective of thinking about the lifeless object: what if it remembers the story with us, what if those objects also have feelings towards it’s owners and how will it think about our wasteful behaviors?
